Latest manufactured controversy - Campaign Debt

As everyone expected, Barack Obama has asked his top fundraisers to help retire at least part of Senator Clinton's campaign debt.

Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday asked his finance team to help Hillary Rodham Clinton pay off a debt of at least $10 million from her failed presidential campaign, setting the stage for joint appearances by the two former rivals later in the week.

Obama's green light to his money bundlers came two days before he and Clinton were scheduled to meet in Washington with some of her top fundraisers in a show of unity after their bruising contest for the Democratic presidential nomination. On Friday, the two planned to campaign together in New Hampshire.

I knew this was going to happen sooner or later.  Good for Obama.

Can this be the last impediment to unity?  On to Unity, NH! :)

Not sure why you think it's a manufactured controversy or a controversy at all.

As an Obama supporter I see nothing wrong with doing something that has been done time and time again between campaign opponents.

The difference this time may be the fact that is a bit more high profile given the players and the amount.

This is a common practice?  I honestly didn't know that?  What are some modern examples of this?

Hillary did it for Tom Vilsack last year.

McCain is helping Giuliani pay down his primary debt. Granted not with any great success :)

Don't need to buy any of the party. You and your 13 bitter friends can do what you want with your votes.

This is only fair (2.00 / 1)

Hillary Clinton is BY FAR the most valuable endorser Obama could have... and it sounds like she plans to take a lot of time out of her own schedule to campaign for him / with him. If these were private appearances she could EASILY earn 6-digit speaking fees. She will draw new crowds, new supporters and new contributors for Obama... in the end her value to him is FAR more than $10 million. Her value to him is truly PRICELESS.

Also, she has already strongly asked her financial supporters to back him (I was on a finance call with her last week), and I'm sure that her supporters' money is flowing into his GE fund already. It simply makes sense that he would (in turn) help with her debt reduction.

Re: This is only fair (none / 0)

Just as a point of information, Barack Obama is the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.  That is where Clinton's fundraisers should go.  She didn't have any other choice.  This move on Obama's part is completely voluntary and is at his discretion.  Good mark in Obama's favor.

Re: This is only fair (1.00 / 2)

Just another point of information Hillary Clinton is the elected candidate abd Barack Obama is the selected candidate.

He's making a popular vote reference (none / 0)

He's suggesting that party bosses decided to make Obama the nominee, which is, while technically true, somewhat misleading.

Did I go off message? (none / 0)

How's this:

Wow! Obama is such a selfless, caring philanthropist to be helping poor Hillary out with the debt of her loser campaign. He's actually letting her share the stage with him and bask in his glory as well! What a guy! He would never act is a selfish or self-serving manner... never!

Is that better?

Re: Did I go off message? (none / 0)

Just responding to your misleading sentence: "she has already strongly asked her financial supporters to back him (I was on a finance call with her last week), and I'm sure that her supporters' money is flowing into his GE fund already. It simply makes sense that he would (in turn) help with her debt reduction."

She was obligated to do it.  He chose to do it.

Re: Latest manufactured controversy - Campaign Deb (none / 0)

I'm still against it.  Top donors giving money to the Clintons just perpetuates this stupid "rich folks giving money to other rich folks" class division we have in our political system.
